About Us

Keep up to date with the goings-on at Honiton Community College.

Years 9 to 13 Reports will be going home tomorrow.

Dear Parent/Carer,

I am writing to inform you of an exciting innovation to support your child’s reading called Accelerated Reader. Some of you may already have knowledge of this as it is used by colleagues in our local primary schools as a tool to promote reading and improve literacy.

All students in years 7 and 8 have recently completed an online reading test which assesses their reading age and identifies a suitable book level for them to choose from the library. When students have finished reading their book, they will then complete a short online test in order to assess their levels of comprehension and whether or not they are ready to move on to the next level of text.

In order to promote reading on a daily basis the College will be introducing DEAR (Drop Everything and Read!), after the October half term holiday. Essentially, students will be given thirty minutes of a lesson every day to read their book, complete their book comprehension test if necessary and/or choose another book.

I will be holding an information evening on Thursday 14th November at the College from 4pm -6pm so that you as a parent can find out about Accelerated Reader and how you too can use the website to track your son/daughter’s reading progress as well as other sessions that I will be delivering to parents so that you may support your child’s reading and literacy skills.

If you would like to attend the session on Thursday 14th November then please email me directly; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or alternatively leave your name and contact details with the school receptionist who can be contacted by telephone 01404 42283.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely

Sky Sports Living for Sport visit – Friday 11th October

24 HCC Sports Academy students were extremely privileged on Friday to be selected to spend the day working with Sky Sports Living for Sport mentors David Hill and Alex Danson. Students experienced an hours session which included introductions to David and Alex and their sporting backgrounds. We focussed the remainder of day around the “Six Keys to Success”

  1. Mental toughness
  2. Hunger to achieve
  3. People skills
  4. Sports and life knowledge
  5. Breaking barriers
  6. Planning for success

These six keys to success are designed to help young people develop valuable life skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and in the future.

Our Sports Academy students participated in some teamwork practical sessions and had the opportunity to question David and Alex about their sporting careers.

David and Alex kindly offered to deliver a session on nutrition with Mr Robson’s Year 9 GCSE Sport Science group.

Follow them on Twitter: @DavidHill_GB and @AlexDanson15

Please see the document attached below. A letter has been sent out to Parents/Carers.

On 1st October more than 400 students at Honiton Community College opened their eyes to the wider world and explored the ideas behind global citizenship for the day. Years 7, 8 and 9 had lessons, assemblies and workshops based around the College’s recently developed links with secondary schools in France, Spain and Ethiopia. Visitors to the College included members of the local Ethiopian community, a formidable East African dance group, a French theatre company and a professional flamenco instructor. There was also the opportunity for students to try their hand at poetry, t-shirt making, French sports and to watch films from different countries.

Dear Parent/ Carer,

September is an exciting time of year for parents, students and teachers. The year 7 students are experiencing their first days in secondary school and are settling in well, growing in confidence every day. If you have a child in year 6 you will be completing application forms for your child’s secondary school place, and if your child is in year 5 they will also becoming more interested in what the future holds. With this in mind we would like to invite year 5 and 6 students to the Open Day and tours.

We believe that College life is all about enjoyment and achievement.  Visit us and see for yourself the commitment, challenge and collaboration that is Honiton Community College.
