Year 7 and 8 reports will be going home tomorrow via the students.
On Wednesday 18th December we hosted the Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner.
122 local people enjoyed a sherry and mince pie reception followed by a 3 course Christmas dinner, entertainment and they then departed with a goodie bag filled with gifts from the college.
A raffle in aid of the Devon air ambulance and the Royal British Legion raised over £120 and a collection from the guests raised an as yet uncounted amount which will be added to the charity figure.
A BBC Spotlight crew were there and recorded a piece that should be shown on tonight’s Spotlight program. The local press were also in attendance so please keep an eye out in the local papers for a story and pictures.
In addition to the outside press we also had our own Press team taking photos and video footage for our own website and pictures have already been uploaded, please check them out.
There are a huge number of people that were involved in the event and they all have my heartfelt thanks for putting in so much time and effort to make 122 people so happy at this time of year.
Special mention to:
BET and Art for creating the goodie bags and everything in them.
Chris Carter, the choir and drama guys who were all exceptional - the guests loved them.
The Sixth form Elves and veg peelers were awesome – I was amazed (but not surprised) at how hard they worked and always with a smile on their face!
The Innovate staff for putting in so much effort in the kitchen over the last few days and producing a magnificent meal for such a large number of people.
Staff and governors who served on the day – it was manic, but well done everyone, we managed it.
Premises Guys for setting up, breaking down and h elp throughout the afternoon
Christine and Steph Johnson for supplying copious amounts of homemade mince pies.
Thanks and apologies to all staff and students who had to move rooms or endure a shortened lunch service.
And a special mention and thanks for Sally and Merlene for putting up with my lists, worries and constant nagging – we got there in the end!
It was a great afternoon and we have brightened up the lives of many local OAPs who will talk about yesterday for many weeks to come.
Merry Christmas to all!

It was more success for Charlie Wright of Honiton Community College recently as he has been selected for a South West Rugby trial for the Under 16’s age group. This feat is all the more impressive as he is achieving this aged 14, and a year early. Charlie has had an excellent year by being selected for the Exeter Chiefs Rugby Academy where his talented has been identified by Robin Cowling, first team manager. Charlie now has to balance his studies with matches, training and strength and conditioning sessions in order to maximise his potential. Charlie’s budding leadership skills have also been identified when he was asked to captain the Exeter Chiefs Academy, as well as being College captain for the past 4 years. Facilitating Charlie’s success is his inclusion in the Honiton Community College Sports Academy, where Charlie receives support through strength testing, regular strength and conditioning sessions and mentor meetings with Sports Academy Co-ordinator and former Exeter Chief, Tom Skelding. Skelding stated, “Charlie has made a great start to his rugby career, his challenge now is to keep developing, both through his skill set and his physicality”. “Charlie epitomises what our vision is for the Sports Academy at Honiton Community College, to develop individual athletes and allow them to reach their sporting potential. Charlie is an excellent role model for his peers and deserves everything he achieves”

Last Wednesday 7 Honiton Students represented the college in the regional heats of the Global 1st Lego League. This year’s challenge was all about natural disasters and required the students to work through the detailed 28 pages of rules to prepare themselves for the day.
HCC robotics club was set up at the beginning of the term and they have been preparing for the tournament from day one. Practicing their robot building as well as programming skills allowed them to solve a range of problems. When the competition pack finally arrived last month they all worked as a team to research natural disasters, prepare a presentation on wild fires and design a basement to save lives. They soon realised that the robot they built would need tank tracks to overcome obstacles on the course and then they spent many evening perfecting the programming to complete as many missions as possible in two and a half minutes.
Last Monday they had a day for final preparation and then they were off to Bristol for the competition at Hewlett Packard’s Bristol Offices. All the students were impressed at how professional the setup was. All the game tables where lit up like snooker tables in the competition hall and the timer music added to the excitement and tension.
This however didn’t phase our students. Their presentation was professional and their calm composition
during the robotics tournament was a credit to the college.
Round one started well with the robot manoeuvring to release the plane then on to set the tsunami off. After returning to base an attempt to move the ambulance to the safe zone just missed on those valuable points. A very good 1st score of 58. The second round saw a score of -5 as a vital piece of the tank track was missing and the robot would not go in a straight line. A string of penalties led to the negative score. Whereas the final round saw a fixed robot with updated programmes complete all its missions without a single penalty and a fantastic final score of 123. Good enough to secure 12th place out of 23 participants. All the team was thrilled with such a good position in their first tournament and then enjoyed watching the heats and final. All the students were a credit to the college and they are already looking forward to competing next year. Well done Honitronics 2013!
