Here we are at the end of another academic year with summer looming up ahead of us.  It’s been a good year; We’ve introduced new product ranges such as the Gino Fantastico Four range and run themed weeks and days throughout the year which have all proved popular.  We are now looking to the coming year to plan what to do to keep our service fresh and interesting.

With this comes the inevitable tariff review.  We are committed to providing our customers quality products at affordable prices, so work hard to prevent any price rises from being necessary; however, poor weather and supply issues has meant that for some products the price has had to increase.  The recent poor weather has meant that fruit and vegetable crops have dropped this year, forcing their cost to rise by up to 50% compared to last year.  Increased demand in UK beef following the horsemeat scandal and a drop in pig production has meant that the fresh meat industry has seen increased prices in some areas.  It’s not all negative though, in areas such as oil, prices have stabalised and are recovering well which offers us some hope for the coming years.

We are aware of the difficulties we all face in the current economic state and are mindful of this when reviewing the tariff.  We always try to maintain the prices of our most popular lines, drive out high cost products that take up a child’s allowance, introduce new products and keep any price increases to a minimum.

We hope this provides some insight on why some of our prices have had to increase and what we have done to stem the increase as much as we can. All that’s left to say now, is have a wonderful summer break and we will see you in September.

After the magic of the Olympics and Honiton's first ever HLC Games in 2012, the Honiton Learning Community ran a second annual HLC Games on the 2nd of July 2013. It was decided this year to host the games at Honiton Community College rather than bus the students down to Exeter as in 2012. Over 300 primary students from year 3-6 attended to compete in running, jumping and throwing events on the colleges track and field areas. Pupils from the primaries at Honiton, Littletown, Offwell, Awliscombe, Broadhembury, Sidmouth, Farway and Upottery competed in the 50m, 60m, 200m, 300m, 600m, 800m, long jump, high jump, mini-javelin and speed bounce for the medals on offer. The teams finished with the 4x75m relay, where Honiton Primary took the title in both the boys and girls Y3/4 relays, with Upottery winning the girls Y5/6 relay and Sidmouth winning the boys.

After 3 hours of fierce competition over 100 students finished in the top 3 for their event/gender/age, recieving gold, silver and bronze medals for their efforts. There were also some "Have a go" activities like beat the goalie and crazy catch for students to test their skills on in between their events. All of the track and field events were run by outstanding Y9 leaders, who worked tirelessly to ensure the competitions were run fairly and that the primary students were improving their technique as they took part. Our thanks go to the following students for their contribution on the day, with a special mention to Snezhana for managing the finish line and keeping Mr Gillon sane throughout a packed track schedule!

On Wednesday 26th June, myself and Miss Bowles set off with nine Year 9 students to undertake a series of workshops to help with their science investigation skills.  The students learnt about planning the factors for an experiment, graph drawing and using data to write a conclusion.  The students worked well and at the end they were required to present their findings as “Top Tips” for GCSE success to teachers from other schools.  Schools from across the region were there as well and during the judging session, one Honiton team won the prize of some book tokens.  Congratulations go to Sadie Pike, Jazmin Chester, Jack DeWinton, Mason Rhode and Oli Reed from the winning team!  There were numerous compliments about the students’ attitude and behaviour and I’m sure Mr. Smith would be pleased to hear that our uniform was seen by many teachers there as the smartest!
