Red, White and Blue Day

Friday, 12th October is a whole school non-uniform day, organised by the 6th Form. Monies collected on the day are then equally divided between a chosen charity and 6th Form funds.

It is actually 'Red, White and Blue Day' on Friday and this is, therefore, the chosen charity for this year. This is a national fundraising event to raise money for Forces personnel and their families.

Please support this event and get into the spirit of the day by wearing red, white and blue and perhaps, get your Union Jacks out as well! It would be appreciated if tutors could encourage their tutees to do similar.

Linking the timetable and the money: essential principles for all senior staff in schools.

As funding for all schools falls in real terms and the Secretary of State asks schools to deliver “more with less” a strategic view of the financial situation in a school puts the emphasis on planning a curriculum and timetable in the context of a balanced budget. This is a paradigm shift for some schools and school leaders who plan a curriculum and timetable then try to find ways of affording it.

The pressure on the timetable or timetable team is increasing as they are expected to deliver a structure which enables the school to be good or outstanding in Ofsted terms and which delivers the school’s curriculum aims and does so with diminishing levels of staffing flexibility. Spending a day “in the timetabler’s moccasins” is essential for all senior staff if whole team planning is to be meaningful and curriculum aims and Ofsted criteria are to be met.  This course is a bespoke combination of ASCL-Professional Development  courses on Timetabling principles. The aim is to outline those principles to staff outside the timetable team and to link them to issues of school finance.

Delivered by Sam Ellis ASCL Funding Specialist

Sam started teaching in 1972 and worked in different schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire in a variety of roles including, Head of Physics, Curriculum Coordinator, Deputy Headteacher and Acting Headteacher. From 1998 to 2008 he was the SHA then ASCL branch secretary for the area and also represented local secondary headteachers on the Schools’ Forum. In that role he became involved in funding issues and co-produced the LA activity led funding model subsequently adopted by the f40 group of Authorities. Sam was appointed as ASCL Regional Officer for Yorkshire and the Humber in September 2008 and transferred to the post of ASCL Funding Specialist in September 2010. In addition to representing and supporting members and delivering training he has developed a range of funding and curriculum analysis tools for ASCL some of which are available from the ASCL website. Sam has been involved in writing timetables and timetable software since 1974

HCC Learning Gateway Launched

Honiton Community College is pleased to announce the official launch of our learning gateway. After a successful pilot last year, with parents from across the college, the Governors approved a whole college rollout during the summer term.

Parents said how useful it was to know instantly about their child’s school day and how it helped them to have interesting discussions with their son or daughter on how their day had gone.

Mr Smith, the college Principal, said “Parental engagement is vital to children’s academic progress – with the Learning Gateway our parents now have access to the information they need at their fingertips. This will improve our home school relationship and support our drive to be an outstanding College.”

Parents who have registered their e-mail address with the College have received an E-mail with their usernames and passwords to the secure servers managed by Devon County Council. When logged in parents will have access to attendance, timetable, achievement and behaviour data that the college holds on it’s management systems.

To help parents learn to use the Learning Gateway a webpage with frequently asked questions has been created and ICT support are offering support sessions during progresses day on the 12th.

Dear Parent/Carer

Re: French Exchange Programme

There is an exciting opportunity for our students to participate in a French Exchange to Strasbourg, a beautiful city in the north-east of France. Our exchange school is La Doctrine Chretienne in Strasbourg city.   A variety of activities are planned, including a visit to a chateau, a river trip, shopping in Strasbourg, and also an evening at a local restaurant to savour regional specialities.   It is expected that  this will  be a reciprocal arrangement  and students will be carefully matched to their partners.

Participation in an exchange ca n bring a whole range of benefits - linguistically and socially. Students gain confidence with their speaking and listening skills. They learn to cope in an unfamiliar environment and to overcome linguistic difficulties, giving a strong sense of achievement, as does learning how to host another young person. Life-long friendships can be established

The exchange will involve hosting a French student from Saturday October 13th 2012 to Thursday October 18th 2012 and then visiting Strasbourg from Saturday March 9th 2013 to Friday March 15th 2013.

The overall cost of the exchange is £350 and will include travel, insurance, accommodation, meals and all visits. Travel will probably  be by coach and rail, although once numbers are finalised we will look into the cheapest option, which may include flying. All payments should be made via ParentPay. You will already have received a letter to activate your account and you are encouraged to do this. Please note that this is now our preferred method of payment for all trips and activities.

The schedule of payments is as follows

Non-refundable deposit of £50 by Friday 5th October 2012

Interim payment of £100 by Friday 7th December 2012

Balance due by Friday 1st February 2013

Honiton Community College Academy Trust operates an insurance policy for organized excursions away from the establishment, but you are of course at liberty to take out your own additional cover. The College reminds parents/carers that we reserve the right to refuse to take a student on off-campus visits or courses if their behaviour has given us cause for concern.

If you would like your son/daughter  to go on this trip please complete and return the reply slip to the Student Office by Friday 21st September 2012 although places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact myself or any member of the Modern  Foreign Languages Department.

Yours sincerely

Mrs M Theeten

Modern Foreign Languages Teacher
