A-LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE

 

English Literature

Description - A mixture of written examination  and extended individual  coursework. You will study texts  ranging from the 16th to 20th centuries, discuss and analyse in
a lively group of like minded  peers, while developing your own reading in depth in preparation for  individual choices in coursework.

• In your first year you will  study a range of poetry, prose  and drama with the theme:  ‘The Struggle for Identity in  Modern Literature.’

• In your second year the theme  is: ‘Love Through the Ages.’

Entry Requirements - Preferably an A*, A or B in English  Literature at GCSE. A desire to read widely.  Willingness to extend own ideas  and justify them convincingly.

Next Steps - English Literature AS and A  Level is excellent preparation  for University, highly regarded  in itself, and valued as a  contributory A Level for other  subjects.
It develops analytical and good  writing skills, which are valued in  the job market. It also introduces  you to a lifetime’s reading  pleasure by developing your ideas  and
personal taste in literature.

 

               

English Language

Description - A mixture of written examination and individual coursework. You will study a range of language issues, including how the English Language has changed
overtime, English is a world Language and how children learn to speak. You will discuss a variety of language-based issues and develop strong analytical skills.

Entry Requirements - A*-C grade in English Language and/or English Literature at GCSE. A commitment of wider reading which will develop understanding of topics
covered. A willingness to participate in spoken discussion work, offering opinions and justifying them convincingly. 

Next Steps - English Language AS and A Level is a highly regarded subject. It has many links with Media Studies and Social Sciences. It develops analytical and precise
writing skills which are valued by both Universities and employers. It introduces you to interesting and varied language debates which affect society today, and how
changes in society may affect the English Language in the future.
